Marina Abromovic and Ulay, Rest Energy, 1980

For four minutes and ten seconds Abromovic and Ulay held an arrow pointed at Abromovic’s heart with the wait of their bodies. Small microphones were placed near each artist’s heart projecting the increasingly intense heartbeats to the audience.

Abromovic has stated “Rhythm 0 and Rest Energy were the most difficult pieces in my entire life of performance artist, because in both pieces I was not in charge.” The piece was meant to surrender complete and total trust between the artists.
